Icebreaker in a nutshell
Kept warm in cold mountain winters, the New Zealand Merino sheep is shorn in summer, and is left with a thin layer that breathes in the heat before the animal bulks up for winter.
That was the science behind Icebreaker developing the world's first Merino wool layering system, based on the knowledge that the Merino wool was created by nature to keep an animal alive in the mountains.
If it didn't work, the animal would die. Ever since then, Icebreaker's role has been to turn this fibre into a clothing system that enables people to return to the mountains.
The challenge to make Merino relevant for another species - the human race - has been won!
Merino wool has many benefits; sustainability, less environmental impact than synthetics and a highly rate of breathability.
Unlike normal wool, its fibres are smaller and do not itch.
Performance-wise it wicks and absorbs moisture, and obviously provides a large amount of insulation for its weight.
And as a bonus, it is much less prone to odour build-up than synthetics...ideal if you need to pack light and don't have many opportunities to do the washing!
