The Montane Extreme Jacket is effectively all three layers in one!
A deep pile fleece inner face provides exceptional warmth to weight ratio and wicking to help maintain comfort across a range of activity levels, thus combining base and mid layers (although often one chooses to wear a base layer under the Montane Extreme Smock as well) and a windproof, water resistant Pertex outer fabric provides protection from all but the worst weather.
Should the garment become wet it will dry fast and still insulate and is far more comfortable for high energy pursuits like cycling than a traditional 'hard-shell', its breathability being roughly the same as a normal fleece.
Thus the Montane Extreme Jacket is a technical end-user piece, and is popular with all those who've tried and tested it, the military and mountain professionals.
