Thermarest - Overview

How Redundancy Changed the Camping World

Boeing’s loss was the camping world’s gain.

When three engineers were made redundant by the aviation company 40 years ago, they decided to build on their experiences and love of backpacking to start their own company.

Thermarest – a line of lightweight, self-inflating sleeping mattresses – was born…and the rest, as they say, is history.

Thermarest revolutionised the world of camping and backpacking, providing a level of comfort for travellers all over the world that previously could only have been dreamed of.

Today, they are world leaders in sleeping systems, thermal insulation, portable seating and specialist camping bed linen, bringing a touch of luxury to the outdoor world.

Challenging Terrain

Their self-inflating sleeping mats were designed to pack down easily into a rucksack, light enough to carry across countless miles over challenging terrain. As you can see from the reviews above people love Thermarest!

And for occasions where weight was even more of an over-riding factor, Thermarest came up with a still more lightweight and packable range of non-self-inflating mats which shaved off yet more extra grams.

The original NeoAir became the most stable, non-self-inflating air mattress around, packing down to a compact 23 x 10 cms and weighing just a shade over 400 grams.

Its 2012 successor, the NeoAir XTherm, packs down to the size of a one litre water bottle – while still guaranteed to provide warmth in extreme conditions.

Sleeping mattresses are rated by their R-Value, the measure of thermal resistance. Thermarest’s NeoAir XTherm is rated at an incredible 5.7.

Three Times the Warmth

In a design which achieves thermal efficiency without the use of down or fibre, the XTherm will keep you three times warmer than any other uninsulated air mattress on the market.

Thermarest’s series of compact, lightweight sleeping mattresses include the Prolite, with an R-Value of 2.2, the Prolite Plus at 3.8, Trail Lite at 3.8, and the legendary Basecamp, which is rated at 5.0 and which has been used on high altitude expeditions all over the world.

Other innovative Thermarest contributions to the world of camping and backpacking include the Compack Chair, which turns a humble sleeping mat into a comfortable seat in which to relax in around the camp fire, the NeoAir Jembe Seat which transforms it into a high, backless stool, and the Thermarest Lite Seat, a self-inflating pad which fits in your pocket and becomes a soft, padded air cushion to combat cold, hard seating at football matches and music venues.
