During the first world war, the American government declared the legendary Coleman lamp essential for illuminating the overnight operations which were responsible for harvesting wheat and corn to boost food supplies. Over one million lamps were manufactured for American farmers throughout the duration of the war.  

During World War Two, the Coleman Pocket Stove was declared one of the two most important pieces of non-combat equipment in existence – the other was the four-wheel-drive Jeep.

Earlier, when electricity started to arrive in smaller towns across the U.S., many rural areas were forced to wait for the service, and the Coleman company found its largest markets with gasoline camping stoves and lanterns.
